Riot Games combined features that no champion had in League of Legends into one champion. Aphelios, the Weapon of the Faithful, the last champion of the Rift, has come up with incredible brand new features that set him apart from all other champions.
First, Aphelios has 5 weapons that he can use. But he can’t choose these weapons as he desires. There is also no E ability available for this champion and has an exclusive interface designed for him.
- Passive, explaining Aphelios’ weapons and level-ups.
- Aphelios’ main-hand weapon and its remaining ammo.
- Q ability.
- Aphelios’ off-hand weapon and its remaining ammo. If its Q is on cooldown, the icon will also indicate the remaining cooldown.
- The next weapon you’ll get once one of your weapons runs out of ammo.
- R ability.
Additionally, if your main-hand gun has 10 or less ammo remaining, an ammo tracker will appear on the right side of your screen so you can track your remaining shots.
Since Aphelios automatically learns his Q and R, he puts his 18 level-up points into stats rather than abilities:
- Attack Damage
- Attack Speed
- Bonus Armor Penetration
How does the kit work?
We mentioned that we don’t actually have complete control of Aphelios’ weapons. In addition, the arsenal of each weapon is one of the elements that Aphelios players must pay attention to throughout games. But Aphelios, who always carries a second weapon, can change his weapon with the W ability. The cooldown time of the Q ability, which is specific to Aphelios’ other weapons, resets when he switches between weapons. So you can use the Q ability and change the weapon to use the Q ability with another weapon immediately.
Aphelios cycles through five weapons, each with its own basic attack. He attacks with his main-hand weapon, but always carries an off-hand weapon he can swap to with W.
Aphelios can’t pick and choose which two weapons he equips at any given time. His weapons have 50 ammo (“Moonlight”) each, and when a weapon runs empty you get the next one in line. Empty weapons go to the end of the line to recharge.
Since Aphelios can swap between his main-hand and off-hand, weapon order changes throughout the game based on which weapons you use first.
Weapons and Abilities
Aphelios has 5 different kinds of weapons.
Calibrum is a poke/harass weapon. Its basic attacks have an extra range.
When abilities deal damage with Calibrum, they mark enemies hit. Aphelios can right-click marked enemies anywhere on the map to follow up with a basic attack from his off-hand weapon (or his non-Calibrum weapon, in cases where he swaps Calibrum to his off-hand before firing). This attack detonates other nearby marks for bonus damage against the marked targets.
Calibrum Q: Moonshot
Fires a skill shot that damages the first unit hit and marks them.
Moonlight Vigil Calibrum effect
Moonlight Vigil’s follow-up attacks mark all enemies hit. These marks deal higher damage when consumed.
Severum is a sustain weapon that heals Aphelios for a portion of the damage it deals. Overhealing from Severum is converted into a small shield. Health regen allows you to stay on lane longer or continue to fight your opponents.
Severum Q: Onslaught
Gain movement speed and rapidly fire your main-hand and off-hand weapons at the nearest enemy, prioritizing champions. Onslaught shots behave like basic attacks but deal reduced damage.
Moonlight Vigil Severum effect
Moonlight Vigil grants Aphelios a flat heal. That way, you can escape from assassins safely or leave long team fights with high health points.
Gravitum is a utility weapon that applies a decaying slow to enemies. Gravitum is a quite useful weapon for catching opponents in Summoner’s Rift. Also, Gravitum’s crowd control effect when used with R ability helps both starting team fight and running away from lane ganks.
Gravitum Q: Eclipse
Damage and root all enemies on the map affected by Gravitum’s slow. Eclipse doesn’t use Aphelios’ off-hand weapon.
Moonlight Vigil Gravitum effect
Moonlight Vigil’s follow-up attacks apply a massively increased slow.
Infernum is an AoE/wave clear weapon. It deals increased basic attack and ability damage and creates a damage cone behind enemies hit. In this way, you can also deal damage to opponents while hiding behind tanks. The rate of attack speed is slower than Aphelios’s other weapons. So it may be necessary to take a better position and read the moves of the opponent.
Infernum Q: Duskwave
Spout a wave of flame, damaging enemies. Then basic attack all enemies hit with your off-hand weapon.
Moonlight Vigil Infernum effect
Moonlight Vigil’s follow-up attacks create damage circles around enemies hit instead of damage cones behind them. It’s a skill that can be quite effective in team fights. R ability with Infernum effect can lower an opponent’s health to death before the fight begins.
Crescendum is a close-range DPS weapon that behaves like a boomerang. Once Aphelios basic attacks with Crescendum he can’t attack again until it returns to him, but his attack resets when it does. Attack speed increases Crescendum’s travel speed instead. The closer Aphelios is to his target, the less distance Crescendum has to travel—and the faster Aphelios can attack.
When abilities or their follow-up attacks deal damage with Crescendum, they create temporary copies of it for each enemy hit that increase the strength of Crescendum’s basic attack.
Crescendum Q: Sentry
Deploy a turret that shoots the nearest target with your off-hand weapon.
Moonlight Vigil Crescendum effect
If Moonlight Vigil hits fewer than three enemies, its follow up attacks still increase the damage of Crescendum’s basic attacks as if at least three enemies were hit.
How should you play Aphelios?
Poke as much as you can the opponent in the early game of the laning phase. The order of the weapons you will use throughout the game will vary depending on your use and match. It’s hard to say anything to create an actual guide for Aphelios. However, it is possible to give little advice about certain phases of the game. The long-range advantage of Calibrum weapon, which is quite similar to Caitlyn’s sniper rifle, can easily poke your opponents in lane o force them back to their base. With Severum, you can gain back your lost health points after trades or pokes by the opponent. This allows you to stay in the lane longer.
The Gravitum weapon makes Aphelios favorable in preparing the lane ganks. You can slow them down with straight hits on your opponents. Then you can pin them to the ground for a short time with your Q ability. You can make it easier for your team to engage and become the advantageous side. The summoner spells your opponent will use or the kill scores you take, will put you ahead. If your opponent takes the lane pressure, you can push minion waves without engaging under the tower.
Thanks to the Infernum, which damages a conical area, you can quickly clean up the minions. Also, you can damage both opponents if you hit from the right angle. With the R of Infernum weapon, you can easily eliminate opponent tanks and carry champions hiding behind them.
Laning as Aphelios
With one of the new mechanics Aphelios brings to the game, Crescendum can provide Aphelios a high rate of attack speed. Similar to Sivir’s Boomerang, the weapon’s Q is also similar to Heimerdinger’s turrets and applies basic attacks with secondary weapon. If you hit a basic attack with Crescendum, you can’t hit a new basic until the weapon is back in your hand. So the closer you are to your opponent, the faster your attack rate increases.
Let us remind you that Aphelios is not a mobile champion. So it’s going to be hard to get rid of any coming skill shots. We can say there is no room for any mistake while playing Aphelios, it is quite important to take the right position. You have to remember that the wrong choices will put you in very difficult situations.
It’s not easy to get used to the mechanics of Aphelios, but the damage and team carry potential is quite high with him. Aphelios is a champion which is quite difficult to play against. The fact that he has multiple advantageous options in various situations, makes him a champion with high game potential.
Aphelios is a mana monster, the mana costs of abilities are quite high. The best choice that can help Aphelios in this situation is the Essence Reaver. The mana from critical attacks will prevent the distress you will experience about using abilities throughout the game.
Runaan’s Hurricane should be the primary choice for Aphelios on his great interaction with his weapons. Runaan’s Hurricane’s application of the basic attack effects makes it an indispensable item for Aphelios. If you hit 3 champions with Runaan’s Hurricane, Aphelios spends 1 bullet from his main weapon. It also provides a great advantage in terms of ability use. Basic attacks with Runaan’s Hurricane make Aphelios root 3 champions at the same time. Also, you can steal more health points with Severum.
