If you have read my post on the Coven skin line, you remember that it is connected to the Elderwood. What I am saying is that both skin lines belong to the same universe and lore. While the Coven refers to a group of witches who worship the Old Gods, the Elderwood is a forest saturated with ancient powers and magics.
During the reign of the Old Gods, the Elderwood was yet to fully bloom. However, after the gods were slain and cast down, their worshippers realized that the forest held a power capable of bringing them back.
As a result of this knowledge, the enchanted forest was heavily attacked. However, the inhabitants of the forest were not defenseless and they finally fought back. Although they managed to slow down the corruption, the old gods are stirring once more.
Only the light of the eclipse can subdue their rise and Leona is ready to do what must be done.
Don’t be confused, this character is not in league with the Coven, in fact, she’s anathema to them.
When the Coven first rose to power, they craved the living enchantments of the Elderwood – a tool, they believed, for the resurrection of their dark patrons. Thus did they fall upon the great forest, and slaughter its children… until a lone sylvan stood against them, stealing the witches’ lives, their magic, and even their names.
Although mankind has betrayed the children of the Elderwood on several occasions, Soraka still loves them.
Too many forget that the heart of the Elderwood was once gentle and kind. Within its confines rested fae, sylvans, and dryads – creatures from another age, who looked upon humanity with curious eyes.
Now, only a scattered few remain, and fewer still, like Soraka, who regard humans fondly.
Taric is the leader of the humans who dedicated themselves to keeping the forest safe.
The Knights of the Emerald Chapel are the once human-stewards of the Elderwood – men, and women who swore an oath to the land itself, and in return were granted unnaturally long life. Now led by a man named Taric, a handful reside there still, protecting the forest from all manner of invaders.
A very powerful goblin, Veigar did not die to the invasions, instead, he taught the invaders a twisted lesson.
A small number of the Elderwood’s children remain largely unaffected by the growing influence of the Coven, to the relief of scholars and storytellers alike.
Unfortunately, those particular children are some of the most whimsical and dangerous, including among their number the insane goblin Veigar and his cursed, hallucinogenic toadstools.
Nocturne is in fact an old god. There is a huge possibility he is the god in contact with Coven Lissandra.
The great corpses of the Old Gods fed the land, and in time even the Elderwood would come to grow over their putrid rot – hiding it, perhaps, for a time. But the Gods never truly died and, with the resurgence of the Coven, one has risen again – Nocturne, the Eternal Nightmare.
Once a playful spirit of the forest, Ahri now fights any who dares to corrupt her home.
Fables of the trickster spirit Ahri have been part of mankind’s history for generations. Fair-skinned and eternally youthful, she is portrayed as a curious quizzical member of the Elderwood’s feyfolk… though in recent years her heart has hardened, as she fights a growing corruption within her ancestral home.
In this universe, Hecarim is a guardian and defender of the Elderwoods.
His is the armor of soft-spun summerwood and rowan – the stones upon him carved in a time before the old gods danced among the trees. Even now, Hecarim travels the shallow rivers and moss flecked paths of the Elderwood, that ageless guardian who protects the forest from mankind’s darkest yearnings.
A man defends his home, a king defends his lands, Azir defends the lands he calls home.
An ancient druid-king of the Elderwood, who has called the forest his home since it stood nameless in the shadow of the gods. Though his people are a dying breed, he has raised an ensorcelled army in their likeness, including the shell of a human king whose story rings all too familiar…
Ivern is a monster created by the Coven. With no command to follow for several years, he now acts on only one impulse.
A nightmarish totem forged of witchcraft and forbidden incantations, Ivern stood among the Olds Gods in the days before their destruction. Left inert for hundreds of years, he has risen along with his brethren to annihilate the paltry works of man.
In this universe, Bard is older than anyone can remember. From all indications, he existed before the old gods. His actions revolve around tending the land only.
Bard is a creature of the old world, they say, older than the great forest, and older even than the seeds it sprouted from. Few records remain of the age before the gods, but it is likely Bard predates them – a truly primordial being, tending to the land since time’s first dawn.
A fairy prince, Rakan concentrates only on his love; Princess Xayah. This disposition has quite benefitted his people well.
Deep in the shaded canopies of the Elderwood, the Fey Prince Rakan and Princess Xayah hold court over two rival fairy dominions. Star-crossed lovers uninterested in the affairs of mortals, their playful romance has insulated their people from the horrors befalling the outside world.
Princess Xayah, once encountered the horrors of the outside world but chose not to get involved. Prince Rakan holds her attention, and love.
Deep in the shaded canopies of the Elderwood, the Fey Prince Rakan and Princess Xayah hold court over two rival fairy dominions. Though Princess Xayah has seen the darkness of the world beyond, she has chosen to simply adopt its colors for her court rather than confront it.
Ornn is one of the few caretakers left. However, he carries out his duties with never-ending fervor.
A truly ancient shaper of the Elderwood, and keeper of the divine knowledge. Beings who tended the trees and directed the rivers are rare in this time of fell magic and endless twilight, yet Ornn continues on, stubbornly clinging to what remains of the old way.
Something interesting is coming to this universe in a couple of weeks. Riot has announced the Old Gods‘ skin line and this is great news. Now, we can have more insight into the lore, and be sure to check on here for it.
See you on the Rift!
